What do you think of when someone says “keyhole”? Nowadays, we have a small metal slit that our slender key fits in as it unlocks a deadbolt or doorknob. But have you ever seen a really old door? You know, one of those heavy wood doors on a house or stone wall with the thick iron hardware that creeks every time it opens. The keys for those doors were so big that you could actually put your eye to the keyhole and see through to the other side.
I imagine looking through one of those keyholes into a secret garden or a magical hidden world. (Okay, I admit I love fairy tales and adventure). These days, we don’t have those big keyholes that reveal a small glimpse of something beyond. Or do we?
What about our life seen through the keyhole?
Someone once told me that we view our lives from a keyhole. It’s as if we’re looking at ourselves, other people, and our circumstances through a tiny window. We can see clearly, but our vantage is very limited. We can’t see what’s happening to the left or the right. We can’t see what’s happening up above or below. We can’t see anything happening behind the scenes. There’s so much going on outside of our view that we’ll never truly comprehend everything about anything.
It suddenly makes me feel very small and uninformed about this world I live in. And even about my own life and the people in it.
But there is someone who sees and knows everything. God. And thankfully we can be on His team. God is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. He created time and lives outside of it. He looks down upon the past, present and future and sees it all at once.
God stands far above our keyhole and has a complete view of the other side. He is the Master Strategist that orchestrates life. He is never surprised. He is never caught off guard. He never takes a coffee break. He knows every detail about us and our life. He knows every detail about everyone in our life. He knows every detail about everyone that will ever touch our life in any way. And the amazing thing is that He’s more detail-oriented than anyone we will ever meet. He knows and cares about all of the details in our life–to the Nth degree.
We may be skeptical at times. We may have doubts about how much God cares about us or what He’s willing to do for us. But the proof is in what He’s already done: He sacrificed His only Son so that we can be reconciled to Him and spend eternity with Him. The way He intended it from the beginning.
We don’t have to worry about having a limited view from the keyhole. Our God sees everything. He alone holds the ultimate power to prevail in every situation. And He has prepared the way for us to come to Him. Now and for eternity.
“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9
May I pray?
Lord, thank you that You are concerned about every detail in our Life. We will never have the vantage point that You do. So if we don’t seek You first, we won’t make the best decisions. Father, please help us to come to You for guidance. And please help us to remember that You made the ultimate sacrifice for us–because You do care and You want us to be with You, now and for eternity. May we stop straining to see through the keyhole and instead fix our eyes on You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Q4U: In what ways do you strain to see through the keyhole of your life instead of looking to God for guidance?
